What We Do . . .
NSA meetings are an excellent place to take speaking risks; try
out new communication techniques; get/give support; be social; and
it's a safe place to share feelings about the unique challenges
a person who stutters faces in a world where fluency is taken for
granted. Basically, it can be whatever you want it to be.
Meetings begin with the Central AZ "Welcoming Words" (see
creed link) then an "icebreaker" consisting of optional
introductions and sharing. At this time, we can talk about challenges
we are facing, successes we've had, and insights we've come to.
The meetings are led by a member who volunteers to facilitate. S/he
selects an activity or topic for discussion. This can range from
a 'round robin' discussion of a challenge that people who stutter
share (for example, how to rise to the challenge of a job interview),
to short spontaneous speeches on selected subjects-"speaking
circles", to a debate on a hot topic in the news, to a video
on stuttering or stuttering therapies. All participation is voluntary.
We encourage each other to stutter openly or practice your own fluency
techniques. Some meetings feature visits from local speech-language
pathologists or others who have insights on stuttering.
We are a support/ self-help group. While some chapter
members are undergoing or have completed formal speech therapy programs,
the NSA is not a therapy group and talking at our meetings is voluntary.
You do not need any experience to join!
Don't be surprised if you hear laughter or see tears at the meetings
because we consider our meetings to be very heartfelt, fun, supportive
and knowledgeable.
